Hearts and Flowers
“Okay, everyone! Take your places,” a voice shouted from somewhere in the darkened auditorium. Lindsay straightened her skirt and smoothed back her dark hair. She stepped out onto the stage and waited for her cue. One, two, three…the music began and Lindsay
whirled out into the middle of a ring of dancers. She kicked and swayed back and forth to the beat. Her partner waited anxiously for her to spring into her somersault and when she did, he hurried across the stage to take her by the hand and pull her gently to her feet. The two then danced together while the other performers faded into the shadows. As the music ended, Lindsay took one last whirl and raised her hands high above her head. Her graceful performance had once again stolen his heart.

Kyle, her partner in the dance, had been in love with Lindsay Syler since the first day she had set foot in the theatre. He remembered how nervous she had been and how the other dancers had given her a hard time for the first couple of months. Lindsay had endured their snide comments and all of their little pranks as she worked to become the troupe’s lead dancer. Eventually, she had gained their respect and she had become more comfortable with herself. She and Kyle had danced together for the last five shows and each time they danced, he fell more and more in love with her. He couldn’t tell her how he felt. There never seemed to be a good time and he wasn’t particularly good at talking to women. So, he danced and for those few moments, he pretended that she was in love with him, too.
Backstage on this particular evening, Kyle was sitting in his dressing room thinking about how well the show had gone when someone knocked on the door. When he opened the door, he was staring into a huge floral arrangement of roses and carnations. The man holding the flowers said, “Kyle Reardon?”
“That’s me,” he said, “What’s this?” He reached out and took the flowers from the delivery man.
“Delivery for you,” the man said. He stood there empty handed, waiting for a tip. Kyle handed him a dollar and thanked him.
“Gee, thanks,” the delivery guy said. Kyle was too confused to notice as he shut the door and stepped back to look at the flowers.
Who would send him flowers? He had no family and as far as he knew, no one had been interested in him for a very long time. This was very strange, indeed. He opened up the card that was embedded in the arrangement and read the words that had been printed carefully.
Wondering who would send you flowers? You’ll probably never guess. It was the only way my heart could say what my lips can’t yet confess.
He turned the small, white card over but there was nothing there to indicate where the flowers had come from. Someone had to be messing with him. What kind of weird message was that to put on a card? He put on his jacket and set the flowers on his dressing table as he headed out the door. He’d leave them here for now.
